Type of Injury
|
The injury or illness in terms of its principal physical characteristics. It is classified based on its cause or mechanism, and includes burns, poisoning, drowning, and the presence of a foreign body.

Nature of Injury
|
Describes how the injury occurred or the type of damage caused to the body, such as fracture, dislocation or sprain.
|
Body Part
|
The body part, or bodily system, directly affected by an injury or disease identified in the nature of injury classification.
|
Region of Treating Facility
|
Region derived from the facility (hospital) where the patient was treated.
|
Asphyxia
|
A condition caused by insufficient oxygen supply to the body due to low oxygen levels in the surrounding air or a mechanical threat to breathing.
|
Drowning/Submersion
|
Accidental drowning or submersion either as a fall or activity in water.
|
Maltreatment/Abuse
|
The infliction non-fatal injuries by another person, by any means, on an adult or child.
|
Environmental
|
Includes heatstroke and sunstroke, as well as other environmental factors such as frostbite, toxic effects of venom animal, radiation effects, effects of heat and light, hypothermia, decompression sickness, barotrauma, and effects of lightening.

Foreign Body
|
An object that enters the body through inhalation, ingestion, or penetration, which is not naturally present and may cause injury or obstruction.
|
Poisoning
|
Includes narcotic and hallucinogen drug poisoning, alcohol poisoning, and other drug poisoning, such as poisoning by salicylates, acetaminophen, benzodiazepines, psychotropics, cardiotropic, other substances, or unspecified substances.

Other Injury
|
In NACRS, 'Other Injury' refers specifically to cases where the ICD-10 code does not fall under asphyxia, burns, drowning, environmental injuries, foreign body, maltreatment, or poisoning. In NACRS data, this category only includes electrocution.

This easy-to-use online data tool is to facilitate and simplify access to injury-related emergency department data for injury prevention stakeholders in British Columbia. This information can be used as valuable background knowledge in injury prevention research, decision making, priority setting, program evaluation and resource allocation.
